Today’s gospel is very much a celebration of women’s
ministry to women. In our reading, we have two expectant mothers
getting together rather like modern mums-to-be having a ‘baby
shower’. In this case, they are sharing joy and expectations against
the odds. One is well past child-bearing age and the other is
expecting a child outside wedlock. Not the most auspicious start to
two precious lives and yet, even the unborn babies give testimony that this
is the fulfilment of a very special promise. Perhaps we too can help
others exceed their own expectations of themselves through a kind and
affirming word.
